Border Pipes
Border pipes are also known as Lowland or Half-Long pipes. Like the Northumbrian small pipes, Border pipes are bellows-blown, but have an open-ended chanter with a tapered bore, making them louder and higher in pitch. Their volume is such that they can be heard comfortably indoors and out. Common in Northern England and Lowland Scotland in the 18th Century, they had all but died out by the mid Twentieth Century, but are now undergoing something of a revival.
